The days of smuggling narcotics and other contraband into the Bartholomew County Jail may be over.
At least that’s the hope of Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies after receiving state-of-the-art scanner technology to detect contraband late last summer.
After six overdose cases over three years were traced to females hiding narcotics in body cavities, the Bartholomew County Council unanimously approved the purchase of a TEK 84 Full Body Scanner on April 9.
One month later, the county commissioners approved a $179,000 bid to purchase the model called “Intercept” from a California company. About $130,000 came from local income tax revenue earmarked for jail use, while the remainder comes from jail commissary funds, Sheriff Matt Myers told the council earlier this year.
