Welcome to Tek84
Tek84 Engineering Group LLC was founded in 2009 by Dr. Steve Smith in a spin-out transaction after the acquisition of Spectrum San Diego's CarSCAN technology by SAIC. The company is a research and development group specializing in the commercialization of novel electronic imaging systems. Dr. Smith engineered the world's first ultra-low-dose backscatter X-ray security screening system (The Secure 1000) in 1992. In 2008, Dr. Smith commercialized a passenger safe drive through vehicle scanner based on dual energy X-ray transmission technology (CarSCAN). As the pioneer of ultra-low-dose screening technology, Dr. Smith worked with stakeholders like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and government end users throughout the 1990s to establish a regulatory framework for these security systems. Tek84 engineers helped establish ANSI N43.17 (Radiation Safety Standard for Personnel Security Screening Systems Using X-ray or Gamma Radiation) and ANSI N42.47 (Standard for Measuring the Imaging Performance of X-ray and Gamma-ray Systems for Security Screening of Humans). In this way, Dr. Smith's work has laid the foundation for ultra-low-dose X-ray screening equipment sold by Tek84 and many other companies.
